Drug-Free Helderberg
On 20 July, at Strand Town Hall, Drug-Free Helderberg launched the organisation‘s new campaign against substance abuse at a community event attended by about 650 high school students from 10 schools in the area. The campaign, headed by Christine Gordon, aims to offer a holistic, drug-free lifestyle to youths and to this end is training teachers, youth leaders, and monitors to deal effectively with drug-related problems.
Support is being offered by the provincial government’s Department of Social Development, the Helderberg Libraries and local volunteers.

Dudley Green honoured with Life Membership of SANCA
SANCA (South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) has bestowed its highest honour, Honorary Life Membership, upon Mr. Dudley Green.
Mr. Green is a founder member of the organisation and has been a SANCA staffer for fifty years serving as Director and ending with voluntary service as Honorary Treasurer on the Management Board. He now stands down due to ill health, and will be very much missed by his colleagues.
Himself in recovery for over fifty years, Dudley Green had a favourite inpirational verse with which he encouraged others on many times.
“Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you can never tell how close you are
It may be near, when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit -
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t QUIT”
